Austria - FGM - Hilfe

FGM - HILFE is an Austrian charity founded in March 1999 with the intention of fighting FGM and providing services for women and girls who have been subjected to FGM.

Presently it has 250 members and about 30 sponsors. Since its foundation, FGM-Hilfe has expanded its scope, but the two main targets have remained central:

  • Financial support of the project Al Baraka Foundation (ABF) in Burao / Somaliland. This project has funded a medical centre which provides free medication, gynaecological checks and counselling for women affected by FGM. It also runs a sponsorship program which provides free education for girls and a subsidised school for 200 girls and boys.
  • Educational program: Elisabeth Cencig, ex-teacher and chairperson of FGM-HILFE, has visited 65 schools in Austria and Italy, talking to students about FGM and informing them of the work being done in Somaliland.
