GAMS Belgium: International Experts’ meeting on female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C)
On the 20-21st of May, the Universities of Geneva, Brussels and Montreal (Le G3 de la Francophonie) organised the third International Experts’ meeting on female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) in collaboration with GAMS-Belgium and other Belgian partners.
The objectives of the meeting were to:
- Share experience, data, research and practices in healthcare and prevention of FGM/C and in the training of healthcare professionals
- Improve collaboration among experts and researchers for future studies and international registries
- Discuss hot topics on FGM/C for which evidence and consensus are lacking
More than 40 prominent scholars and experts from all continents shared the results of their latest research.
On the 22nd of May GAMS Belgium had the pleasure to participate alongside scholars in a symposium on the topic “Rethinking Female Genital Operations: new perspectives on the zero tolerance debate” addressing links between FGM/C, aesthetical genital surgeries in women, male circumcision and intersex genital mutilations.
Moreover, the francophone group of clinicians caring for women/girls living with FGM/C “Care&Share” held their annual meeting.
It was a very intense and highly enriching few days.
