Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment

The Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1984 and, came into force in 1987.

The Convention requires states to undertake legislative, administrative, judicial or other measures to prevent torture in their territory, enshrines the principle of non-refoulement for refugees taken from the Geneva Convention and declares torture as an extraditable offence.
