Maputo Protocol (Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa)

To mark the 20th anniversary of the day the Maputo Protocol was adopted, we want to share this important treaty on human rights.
The Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa is a cornerstone legal document in the movement to end gender inequality and gender-based violence for African women and girls. Article 5 specifically outlines FGM as a harmful practice and sets out a few measures to tackle it by raising awareness, collaborating with communities and across sectors, and establishing accessible support services.
Twenty years later, this international human rights instrument established by the African Union remains more relevant and valuable than ever.
