European Parliament Resolution on ending female genital mutilation (2012)
The Resolution adopted by the European Parliament in 2012 called for an end to FGM in Europe and abroad through prevention, protection measures and legislation. The European Parliament called on Member States to continue to ratify international instruments and implement them through comprehensive legislation that prohibits all forms of female genital mutilation and provides for effective sanctions against the perpetrators, and urged the European Commission to ensure that measures aimed at combating gender-based violence and promoting the empowerment of women are mainstreamed in all EU development policies and programmes and give specific attention to female genital mutilation as part of an overall strategy for combating violence against women.
