Worldwide, more than 200 million girls and women are affected by Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). In Germany alone, Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting affects around 60.000 girls and women and another 15.000 are considered at risk. Nowadays, FGM/C is an urgent matter in Germany, which presents us with major challenges.
Coordinated by Dr. Gwladys Awo, this paper covers a range of topics, such as the background knowledge about FGM/C worldwide, the legal aspects on international and national level, as well as the challenges for asylum seekers.
In this brochure, you will find:
- The various criteria and stages that are important in the counselling of women affected by FGM/C;
- The procedure for the elaboration of medical certificates for affected women (illustrated by means of case examples);
- The preparation and prerequisites for the reconstruction of the clitoris.
The variety of information and recommended course of action has been described by Gwladys Awo, based on her various years of experience and analysis gained through her consultations with the affected families and institutions concerned, and through the training of the affected communities and experts to provide clarity at various levels.
