UN General Assembly - Resolution on Intensifying global efforts for the elimination of female genital mutilations (2012)
On 20 December 2012, the United Nations General Assembly approved a Resolution on Intensifying global efforts for the elimination of female genital mutilation. This global call for intensified efforts to end FGM has been an important step to tackle this human rights violation.
The resolution emphasizes the need for states to develop a long-term and strategic vision, where punitive measures are complemented with awareness-raising, educational activities and the protection of women and girls. The resolution calls for national action plans and strategies that are comprehensive, culturally sensitive and ensure the participation of the affected communities.
The resolution also calls on the international community to support an end to female genital mutilation through ensuring the allocation of financial resources, as well as by taking into account the protection and promotion of the rights of women and girls in all programmes and activities.
